There are many questions that people ask when considering joining the team at Chelsea SES. We have listed many of the more frequent questions and the answers in an effort to make your decision regarding joining a little more informed.

Q: How much time is involved?

A: We train every Monday evening except for long weekends and for a period of about 6 weeks over the Christmas/New Year period. Training is from 7pm to 10pm and every member is required to attend at least 60% of training nights. Once you become operational you will be put into a team which is rostered for duty 1 week out of 3 except for major events when it is all available members to attend.

Q: Who pays for the training?

All training is paid for by VICSES.

Q: What if I work full or part time?

A: As a volunteer we only expect you to give up your time when available. Some employers now have an Emergency Service Volunteer component written into their work agreements. If you are in this position, it means that as an SES volunteer , you can take a set amount of time from work without losing pay. If you are not in this position, then work takes priority over SES. Please check with your own employer to establish your situation regarding this . Many employers however, see an employee who volunteers with the SES as a positive situation.

Q: Do I have to pay for the uniform?

A" No; all PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) is provided to you including boots at NO cost.

Q: What level of fitness do I need to join?

A: There is no specific level of fitness required, obviously, if you are wanting to become an operational member, a moderate level of fitness would be an advantage.

Q: Is there an age limit to joining?

A: You must be 18+. Some units have junior members from 16, but at Chelsea it is 18 and up, however, there is no maximum age limit.

Q: Suppose I join but don't want to be climbing on roofs etc?

A" No problems; there are plenty of jobs for people who wish to be Non-Operational including PR, Communications and administration.

Q: Do I need any special qualifications?

A: No; we train you in all of the areas that you will need including first aid. In some cases, Nationally recognised training is recognised by VICSES as long as proof is given.

Q: Do I need a medical to join?

A: No; once you have completed the application form, you will need to complete a Victoria Police check, even if you have already completed one of these, a new one is required to accompany your application to join the SES.

Q: How long does it take to become operational?

A;You can become operational if you are deemed competent after completing your fundamentals training which takes 12 weeks. This includes, knots and lashings, lights and generators, ladders, patient handling etc. Following this, you will be put into a team to continue your training for General Rescue. Once this completed you will have the opportunity to take part in a large number of training courses including boats, 4 wheel drive, USAR 1 (Urban Search & Rescue)  search and many more.

Q: What happens if I get hurt while training or on a job?

A: Members are covered by VICSES OHS Policy if injured while travelling to/from or attending any VICSES approved activity.

Q: Is there any support system for members following emotional or physical trauma?

A: Yes, VICSES has a peer support system that can be used by any member at any time. This support can be at a unit level or one on one, face to face or by phone. This support is available 34 hours a day.

Q: Does Chelsea SES attend road accidents?

A: No. Chelsea SES is NOT a road accident unit (Closest is Frankston). However, at times we are called to provide support only to Police or other agencies at accident scenes with lighting etc.
