What you can do
Even though Chelsea SES members are there to help when you need them; there are some things that you can do for yourself to be a little more prepared in case of an emergency situation at home.
This video has some great tips that just might make the difference when the storm hits your place! It's no good trying to find these tips when the storm is raging, there is a liklihood that you will have no power so suddenly it's dark, it's stormy and you're trying to find somewhere to give you information. Another thing is to ensure that you have a Home Emergency Kit.
Home Emergency Kit:Your emergency kit should include items you and your family members will need in storms, floods and other emergencies. Your emergency kit should contain at least the following at all times:
- A portable radio with spare batteries
- A torch with spare batteries
- A first aid kit
- Rubber gloves
- Candles and waterproof matches
- Important papers including emergency contact numbers
- A copy of your Family Home Emergency Plan
- A waterproof bag for valuables
- A good supply of required medications
- Any special requirements for babies and the disabled, infirm or elderly
- Strong shoes
- Enough non-perishable food and drink for your family for 72 hours
Remember to consider family members with special needs, such as infants and elderly or disabled persons.
For baby
- Formula
- Nappies
- Bottles
- Powdered milk
- Medications
For adults
- Heart and high blood pressure medication
- Insulin
- Prescription drugs
- Denture needs
- Contact lenses and supplies
- Glasses
For animals
- Food
- Medication
- Leash/muzzle
- Cage
Important family documents – keep these records in a waterproof, portable container.
- Will, insurance policies, important records
- Passports, Tax File Number, immunisation records
- Bank account numbers
- Credit card account numbers
- Inventory of valuable household goods, important telephone numbers
- Family records (birth, marriage, death certificates)
